All Zanpakuto in Bleach
Complete guide to 26 Zanpakuto, Shikai releases, and Bankai forms — every Soul Reaper's blade ability explained. Updated 2026.
What is a Zanpakuto?
A Zanpakuto is the primary weapon of a Soul Reaper (Shinigami) in Bleach. Each sword has its own name, spirit, and unique ability — no two Zanpakuto are the same. Soul Reapers unlock their sword's power in two stages: Shikai (initial release, unlocked by knowing the sword's name) and Bankai (final release, requiring the Soul Reaper to materialize and defeat their sword's spirit). Achieving Bankai normally takes 10+ years of training; Ichigo mastered it in 3 days using a compression method created by Urahara.
The Bankai amplifies a Soul Reaper's power 5–10× and often changes their appearance. Captains are required to have mastered Bankai. Some Zanpakuto spirits — like Zangetsu — are deeply tied to their wielder's inner conflicts and evolve alongside their personal growth throughout the series.
Zanpakuto (Shikai)
Ashisogi Jizo
Ashisogi Jizo's Shikai releases a paralytic poison that it injects into anyone struck by the blade. The poison targets the nerve pathways between brain and limbs — the target remains fully conscious but loses control of their arms and legs. Mayuri developed this strategically: he prefers studying live opponents. The Bankai, Konjiki Ashisogi Jizo, is a grotesque giant larva-creature that secretes a lethal nerve gas unique to each person Mayuri has studied.
Benihime
Wielder: Kisuke Urahara
Benihime is a blood-crimson bladed Zanpakuto that generates a unique crimson energy net or shield called Nake (Cry), allowing Urahara to fire blasts of destructive spiritual energy or block incoming attacks with a mesh-like barrier. Urahara's full command of Benihime — combined with his scientific genius — makes him one of the most versatile fighters in the series, even without revealing his full Bankai until the Thousand-Year Blood War.
Hozukimaru
Hozukimaru begins as a spear, then extends into a three-section staff with the command 'grow'. As Ikkaku sustains it through a fight, Hozukimaru gradually accumulates power, becoming more destructive over time — though this makes early-fight Ikkaku seem weak. The Bankai, Ryumon Hozukimaru, releases a massive dragon-banner form that Ikkaku guards as a closely kept secret, having been trained by Zaraki Kenpachi.
Hyorinmaru
Hyorinmaru is the most powerful ice-type Zanpakuto in Soul Society. Its Shikai allows Hitsugaya to control water and ice in the atmosphere, creating a serpentine ice dragon that strikes targets and encases them in ice on impact. He can also create an ice wing structure that enables flight. The cold aura radiates outward, freezing the air around him.
Kazeshini
Kazeshini takes the form of two scythe-like blades connected by a long chain, which Hisagi wields as a dual spinning weapon capable of slicing from multiple angles simultaneously. Kazeshini literally means 'death wind' — the blades rotate rapidly and create wind pressure with their motion. Despite its violent appearance, Hisagi is reluctant to use Kazeshini because he believes a weapon shaped like death should not be unsheathed lightly.
Minazuki
Wielder: Retsu Unohana
Minazuki takes the form of a large, flying manta-ray-like creature that can swallow injured allies and heal them inside its stomach acid, expelling them fully recovered. This peaceful appearance conceals Unohana's true nature as the first Kenpachi — the most brutal killer in Soul Society's history. Her Bankai (also Minazuki) drapes her in her own blood, coating the blade in a corrosive liquid that dissolves anything it touches while regenerating Unohana infinitely.
Nozarashi
Nozarashi is Zaraki's Zanpakuto, finally achieved when he learned his sword's name after decades of fighting without ever releasing it. Its Shikai takes the form of a massive battle-axe-like cleaver that amplifies Kenpachi's already overwhelming physical power to catastrophic levels — capable of splitting spiritual constructs and opponents that no previous opponent could match. Its Bankai transforms Zaraki into a berserk demon of pure destruction.
Ryujin Jakka
Wielder: Genryusai Shigekuni Yamamoto
The oldest and most powerful fire-type Zanpakuto in existence. Even sealed, Ryujin Jakka emanates heat intense enough to vaporize lesser opponents. Its Shikai release ignites the blade in flames hot enough to incinerate almost anything and allows Yamamoto to reshape the fire into walls, pillars, and a surrounding ring of inescapable flame. Its Bankai, Zanka no Tachi, compresses all that power into focused destruction.
Senbonzakura
Wielder: Byakuya Kuchiki
Senbonzakura's Shikai shatters the blade into thousands of micro-scale blade fragments that appear as pink cherry blossom petals. Byakuya controls their movement with a thought, directing them to slice anything they pass through. The density of blades makes direct attack impossible for most opponents. Its Bankai, Senbonzakura Kageyoshi, scales this up to a city-wide storm of blades.
Shinso
Wielder: Gin Ichimaru
Shinso extends from a wakizashi to a long thin blade at extreme speed with the command 'shoot to kill'. Gin uses it to stab targets at over 500 times the speed of sound across distances exceeding 100 metres, retracting instantly. The true secret — only revealed in his final confrontation with Aizen — is that Shinso's actual ability is to shrink and expand at the cellular level, allowing the blade to poison on extension rather than merely stab.
Sode no Shirayuki
Wielder: Rukia Kuchiki
Considered the most beautiful Zanpakuto in Soul Society, Sode no Shirayuki's Shikai turns the blade pure white and grants Rukia mastery over ice. Her three dances — Some no Mai (creates ice pillars), Tsugi no Mai (creates a freezing circle), and San no Mai (creates ice lance projectiles) — each build on absolute zero temperature principles. Her Bankai, Hakka no Togame (achieved in TYBW), approaches true absolute zero.
Tenken
Wielder: Sajin Komamura
Tenken creates a giant disembodied arm, leg, or other body part that mirrors and amplifies Komamura's own sword strikes at massive scale. Each swing of his blade produces a giant spectral equivalent that devastates the surrounding area. Its Bankai, Kokujō Tengen Myō'ō, manifests the full body of an armored giant whose movements match Komamura's perfectly — one of the most visually dramatic Bankai in the series.
Wabisuke
Wabisuke's blade has a right-angle hook at the tip. Its Shikai ability doubles the weight of anything it strikes — and the effect stacks on each subsequent hit. A single blow doubles the target's weight; two blows makes them four times heavier; three blows eight times. Eventually the target collapses under their own multiplied mass, unable to lift their own weapon or body. Paired with Kira's deliberate, methodical fighting style, it is almost inescapable.
Zabimaru
Wielder: Renji Abarai
Zabimaru transforms into a segmented bone-blade whip with a snake-like extension, allowing Renji to attack at extended range and wrap around opponents. The segments can detach and reattach, and the blade's saw-like teeth shred on contact. Renji's bond with Zabimaru deepened over time, eventually unlocking Hihio Zabimaru — the true Bankai form showing the full snake-baboon entity.
Zangetsu
Wielder: Ichigo Kurosaki
Ichigo's Zanpakuto manifests as an oversized black-bladed cleaver in its sealed state, reflecting his immense but untrained spiritual pressure. The Shikai release merges the power of the Hollow Quincy spirit within him, producing an unorthodox permanent release form. The black blade channels his Getsuga Tensho — a condensed arc of spiritual energy — even before achieving Bankai.
Bankai (Final Release)
Daiguren Hyorinmaru
Wielder: Toushiro Hitsugaya
Toshiro Hitsugaya's Bankai — the most powerful ice-type Zanpakuto. Creates a dragon of ice, forms ice wings, and can freeze the area around Toshiro. In its mature form, ice flowers gradually bloom indicating increasing power.
Hakka no Togame
Wielder: Rukia Kuchiki
Achieved in the Thousand-Year Blood War arc, Rukia's Bankai surrounds her in ice that approaches absolute zero — so cold that anything within range, including the air itself, is instantly crystallized. Rukia herself is encased in ice, making her appear as a white-robed figure of pure cold. The temperature is so extreme that even Äs Nödt's fear-based powers became physically frozen before they could act on her.
Hihio Zabimaru
Wielder: Renji Abarai
Renji's Bankai summons the true form of Zabimaru — a colossal snake-baboon skeleton made of bone segments connected by spiritual energy. Renji rides on its back and can direct it to crush or engulf opponents. After his training with Ichigo and Rukia during the Soul Society arc aftermath, Renji mastered the full form — Soo Zabimaru — which strips away the bone exterior to reveal a true serpent form with far greater speed.
Kamishini no Yari
Wielder: Gin Ichimaru
Gin Ichimaru's Bankai — extends his blade 13 km at 500 times the speed of sound, making it virtually impossible to dodge. The blade can also contract and poison targets from the inside.
Kannonbiraki Benihime Aratame
Wielder: Kisuke Urahara
Kisuke Urahara's Bankai — allows him to restructure and heal anything its slash touches, including living bodies. He can rearrange the composition of whatever he cuts — an extraordinary utility Bankai.
Kokujō Tengen Myō'ō
Sajin Komamura's Bankai — summons a massive armored giant that mirrors Komamura's movements, amplifying every strike into a titan-scale attack.
Konjiki Ashisogi Jizo
Mayuri's Bankai is a massive golden larva-creature with a baby's face and bladed limbs that secretes a lethal nerve agent tailored specifically to whoever Mayuri has studied. The poison is unique to each individual — any antidote developed would only work on the person it was made for. Over the series Mayuri upgrades Konjiki Ashisogi Jizo repeatedly, adding self-destruct protocols, regeneration systems, and the ability to transform the released form mid-battle.
Ryumon Hozukimaru
Ikkaku's Bankai is a guarded secret — the three-section staff of Hozukimaru's Shikai splits into a massive halberd, a large sword, and a long dragon-headed banner that accumulates the power built up during Shikai. The dragon banner must be filled with enough blood (Ikkaku's own or the enemy's) before it activates. Ikkaku refuses to use Bankai in most fights out of loyalty to Zaraki's ideal that power should need no shortcut.
Senbonzakura Kageyoshi
Wielder: Byakuya Kuchiki
Byakuya Kuchiki's Bankai — releases millions of tiny blade petals that can cut opponents from any angle simultaneously. The petals can be condensed into large blades or scatter into the ultimate defense.
Tensa Zangetsu
Wielder: Ichigo Kurosaki
Ichigo Kurosaki's Bankai — compresses the tremendous power of Zangetsu into a sleek black blade, dramatically increasing his speed and power. In its true Bankai, the blade takes on a more dynamic shape reflecting both his Shinigami and Hollow heritage.
Zanka no Tachi
Wielder: Genryusai Shigekuni Yamamoto
Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto's Bankai — the most powerful fire Bankai in existence. Absorbs all fire into the blade, making it appear as a charred husk while producing temperatures exceeding the sun's surface. Can summon an army of the dead.
