About
Retsu Unohana is the captain of the 4th Division and the most skilled healer in Soul Society—and the original Kenpachi, the first and most violent murderer in all of Soul Society's history who reformed herself to become a healer after defeating a young Zaraki Kenpachi whose untamed power was the first thing that ever made her feel alive. Her final confrontation with Kenpachi in which she sacrificed her own life to unlock Kenpachi's full power is one of Bleach's most devastating and thematically rich sequences. Her dual identity as both the most gentle and most terrifying figure in Soul Society defines the paradox at the heart of Bleach's world.

Frequently Asked Questions — Retsu Unohana
Updated 2026
Is Unohana a villain?
Unohana is not a villain, but she is revealed to be the first and most brutal Kenpachi — the original wielder of that title, known as "Yachiru Unohana." She killed Zaraki over and over as a child and unconsciously suppressed his growth because she found their fight thrilling. In the TYBW arc she dies fulfilling her final purpose: unlocking Zaraki's true power by fighting him to the death.
What is Unohana's Bankai?
Unohana's Bankai, Minazuki, drapes her in her own blood, which coats her blade. The blood dissolves anything it touches — endlessly corroding — while Unohana herself regenerates infinitely. The Bankai turns their duel into a mutual death loop that forces Zaraki to kill her repeatedly until his full power unlocks.
What is Unohana's Shikai?
Unohana's Shikai, Minazuki, takes the form of a large flying manta-ray-like creature. It can swallow injured allies and heal them inside its stomach acid, then expel them fully recovered. This healing Shikai conceals the true violence of her Bankai.
What squad is Unohana captain of?
Unohana is Captain of Squad 4 — the medical and healing division of the Gotei 13. Squad 4 is often underestimated but Unohana herself is secretly the most dangerous captain in history.
Why is Unohana so important in Bleach?
Beyond being the most skilled healer in Soul Society, Unohana's true significance is revealed in TYBW: she was the first person to hold the title of Kenpachi (the strongest Shinigami in a generation), and her sacrificial final battle with Zaraki Kenpachi releases his full sealed potential — essential for the fight against the Sternritter.
