Set in the eleventh century during the Viking Age, Vinland Saga follows Thorfinn, the son of the legendary warrior Thors, whose father was killed by the mercenary band of Askeladd when Thorfinn was a child. Consumed entirely by the desire for revenge, the young Thorfinn travels with Askeladd's company — waiting for the day he grows skilled enough to kill his father's murderer in fair combat. The series is a meditation on the nature of violence and what it costs a person to build an identity entirely around hatred.
