Biography

Makoto Yukimura is a Japanese manga artist from Hokkaido who created Vinland Saga, serialized in Monthly Afternoon since 2005. Before Vinland Saga, Yukimura created the acclaimed science fiction series Planetes, which explored themes of debris collection in space and was adapted into a celebrated anime series. Vinland Saga represents a significant tonal departure — rooted in Viking Age history and the Norse sagas of the Vinland expeditions to North America — and demonstrates Yukimura's range as both a visual storyteller and a researcher. He is known for his meticulous historical research and has acknowledged adapting real historical figures including Thorkell the Tall, Askeladd (loosely based on Olaf Haraldsson's follower), and Canute the Great into the narrative. The series is notable for its evolving thematic focus — beginning as a revenge story and transforming, as Thorfinn matures, into a meditation on pacifism and the possibility of a life after violence.
