The Alien Bride Premise

How does Urusei Yatsura begin, and what is its format?

The series (1981-1986, Studio Pierrot/Studio Deen) opens with the alien Oni girl Lum arriving to conquer Earth, only for hapless teenager Ataru Moroboshi to win a game of tag against her for the planet's fate. Ataru's desperate lie that he'll marry her if she loses convinces Lum they're now engaged, and she moves in with him permanently. Most episodes are self-contained, two-segment gag and romance stories rather than multi-episode arcs, following the chaos that erupts around Ataru, Lum, and Tomobiki town's ever-growing cast of aliens, ghosts, and rivals.

A Growing Cast Across a Long Run

How does the cast and tone evolve over the series?

Across its 167-episode run, the show steadily expands its ensemble — adding recurring rivals and allies like Shinobu, Mendou, Ryuunosuke, and Lum's family — while shifting through six different opening themes and multiple directors, including a young Mamoru Oshii in the early seasons, whose sensibilities carried over into the first two theatrical films.
