College student Ken Kaneki survives an attack by ghoul Rize Kamishiro, only to wake up with her organs transplanted into him. Half-human, half-ghoul, unable to eat human food but hungry for flesh — Kaneki's new life begins.
Yamori tortures Kaneki for days, breaking his mind and forcing him to awaken something inside himself. Kaneki's hair turns white. He eats Yamori. The soft protagonist becomes the ghoul he feared.
Kaneki faces Arima, the CCG's most powerful investigator. Arima defeats him utterly — Kaneki cannot match the gap. The first season ends with Kaneki broken and captured.
Kaneki, now going by Haise Sasaki in Anteiku: Re, begins recovering his memories. The Black Reaper persona — the full awakening of his ghoul side — emerges as he fights to protect his squad.
