An unassuming high schooler who has delivered tofu down Mt. Akina's hairpin turns every morning for five years, unknowingly mastering downhill racing in the process. His natural talent behind the wheel of his father's AE86 makes him a legend before he even realizes racing culture exists.

Takumi's father, a former racing legend himself who trained his son without Takumi ever realizing it — the early-morning tofu runs were deliberate driving lessons in disguise. Gruff and inscrutable, he rarely praises Takumi directly.

Takumi's excitable best friend, an aspiring racer himself whose enthusiasm for cars and girls far outpaces his actual driving skill. He provides much of the series' comic relief.

The calculating, analytical leader of the Akagi RedSuns, nicknamed the 'White Comet.' He recognizes Takumi's raw talent early and eventually recruits him to lead Project D, the touring team that takes on racers across the prefectures.

Ryosuke's younger brother and the RedSuns' ace downhill racer, driving a Mazda RX-7 FD. Hot-headed and fiercely competitive, his rivalry with Takumi pushes both drivers to improve.
