Episodes 1-76 (2000-2002) follow Ippo Makunouchi, a shy, bullied high schooler, after boxing coach Genji Kamogawa recruits him following a chance street fight. Ippo trains at the Kamogawa Boxing Gym and rises through the amateur and professional ranks, driven by his fear of being weak and his determination to prove his own worth.
