Overlord's world-building is its most underrated quality — the kingdom of Re-Estize, the Slane Theocracy, the Baharuth Empire, and the demi-human nations each have coherent political logic, competing interests, and internal factions. Ainz's conquests and diplomatic manipulations are interesting in part because the world he's navigating has genuine complexity beyond 'generic fantasy setting.'

The 1/10 Battle — Overlord Season 4's Most Disturbing Sequence

Season 4's depiction of Ainz's massacre of the Kingdom of Re-Estize's army — reducing it to 1/10 its size to demonstrate Nazarick's power and claim territory — is the series' most explicit confrontation with the fact that its protagonist is a war criminal by any reasonable standard. The sequence is deliberately uncomfortable, and the series' refusal to frame it as triumphant is its most mature storytelling choice.
