Sigurd is Ketil's elder son, a vain and status-obsessed young man whose envy of his father's slave Thorfinn—whom Sigurd cannot defeat despite his free-born warrior training—drives him to petty cruelty and political maneuvering. His jealousy is both comic and revealing, exposing how hollow the warrior class ideal becomes when confronted with someone who has genuinely transcended violence through suffering and renunciation. His eventual role in the events that destroy his family's farm shows how personal ego can accelerate systemic collapse.
