Episodes 1–14. Ten thousand players are trapped inside the virtual reality game Sword Art Online — death in the game means death in real life. Kirito, a solo player and beta tester, works to clear all 100 floors of Aincrad and free the players.
Is SAO Aincrad filler or canon?
Fully canon — the original arc from Reki Kawahara's light novels. Note that the anime skips several side story events from the novels (some covered in SAO Ordinal Scale film and extra editions). The core story is fully told here.
Fairy Dance (ALO)

Episodes 15–25. After escaping SAO, Kirito discovers his girlfriend Asuna is trapped in another VR game — ALfheim Online — by a corrupt company executive. He dives back into VR to rescue her.
Is the Fairy Dance arc filler or canon?
Fully canon (from the second light novel). It is the most controversial arc in SAO — many fans find it weaker than Aincrad. It introduces Kirito's cousin Suguha (Leafa) as a new major character.
Phantom Bullet (GGO)

Episodes 26–38. Kirito enters Gun Gale Online — a shooter VR game — to investigate the "Death Gun" incident, where players are mysteriously dying in real life after being shot in the game.
Who is Sinon in SAO?
Sinon (Shino Asada) is introduced in GGO — a skilled sniper traumatised by a real-life shooting incident. She is one of the series' most developed characters and plays a central role in the Phantom Bullet arc.
Calibur

Episodes 39–40. Kirito and friends pursue a legendary sword in ALO in a light-hearted side quest arc between major story arcs.
Is Calibur filler or canon?
Canon (from a side story volume) but lighter in tone — essentially a fun adventure for the group with low stakes. It can be watched for character moments.
Mother's Rosario

Episodes 41–49. Asuna takes centre stage as she befriends Yuuki — an incredibly powerful player and terminal AIDS patient who wants to create a memory before she dies.
Is Mother's Rosario worth watching?
Mother's Rosario is widely considered the best arc in SAO — a deeply emotional story about life, death, and what remains after we're gone. Asuna gets her strongest character development here. Yuuki is beloved by fans.
Alicization

Episodes 50–72. Kirito wakes up in the Underworld — a secret government project creating AI soldiers with real human souls. He tries to find his way out while his AI childhood friend Alice grows to true sentience.
Is Alicization canon in SAO?
Fully canon — Alicization (volumes 9–18 of the novels) is the longest and most ambitious arc in the series. It explores AI consciousness, human rights, and the ethics of virtual reality at a much deeper level than previous arcs.
Alicization — War of Underworld
Eps 73–96 · 24 epsWhat episodes are War of Underworld in SAO?
Episodes 73–96. A massive invasion of the Underworld begins. Players from the real world log in to fight on both sides of the conflict, and the Administrator — the Underworld's tyrannical ruler — is confronted.
Is War of Underworld filler or canon?
Fully canon — the second half of the Alicization arc from the novels. It features the largest-scale battles in the series and major consequences for the AI characters.
