Thatch was the fourth division commander of the Whitebeard Pirates, a cheerful and skilled cook loved deeply by the entire crew—including Whitebeard himself. His murder at the hands of Marshall D. Teach over the Yami Yami no Mi he had discovered became the trigger for Ace's fateful pursuit of Blackbeard and set in motion the events leading to Marineford. Though he appears only in flashbacks, his warmth and the grief his loss caused make his presence felt throughout the story as a reminder of everything Blackbeard destroyed.
