Squard is the captain of a subordinate pirate crew allied with the Whitebeard Pirates, a scarred man with a deep hatred of the Roger Pirates born from the massacre of his crew. During the Marineford War he was manipulated by Akainu into believing Whitebeard had betrayed the allies and stabbed the Emperor through the chest, a moment of devastating treachery born from trauma and manipulation. His guilt and Whitebeard's forgiveness of him became one of Marineford's most emotionally powerful moments.
