Smoker is a Marine officer whose unwavering belief in personal justice has led him to pursue Luffy since Loguetown, wielding the Moku Moku no Mi which transforms his body into smoke and makes him virtually untouchable without Haki or seastone. Unlike most Marines, he acts on his own moral code rather than blind orders, repeatedly letting enemies go when he judges them innocent and clashing with his superiors over questionable directives. His gruff exterior, perpetual cigar, and genuine commitment to protecting civilians make him one of the series' most complex and respected recurring Marine characters.
