Nojiko is the adoptive older sister of Nami and the daughter of the beloved Marine Bellemere who raised them both in Cocoyasi Village under Arlong's oppressive rule. While Nami secretly worked under Arlong to accumulate enough money to buy the village, Nojiko stayed behind and protected the secret of her sister's mission from villagers who felt betrayed. Her unwavering trust in Nami and her bravery during Luffy's battle with Arlong—swimming through gunfire to manually inflate a buoy keeping a drowning Usopp alive—demonstrated that strength of character doesn't require a Devil Fruit.
