Hatchan, known as Hachi, is an octopus fish-man and former member of the Arlong Pirates who fought against the Straw Hats in East Blue before being defeated. After his loss he reformed himself, running a floating takoyaki stand before being dragged back into trouble on the Sabaody Archipelago, where his renewed friendship with Nami and his anguish at fish-man discrimination played out in painfully human terms. His arc from antagonist to repentant friend is one of the series' earliest and most genuine portrayals of redemption.
