Asuma Sarutobi is the leader of Team 10, son of the Third Hokage, and one of Konoha's most beloved jonin, whose Wind-natured chakra channeled through his chakra blades created one of the series' most elegant close-range combat styles. His relationship with Kurenai and the child they were expecting gave the Akatsuki arc's early losses a particular sting—his death at Hidan's hands forced Shikamaru into his most devastating and emotionally honest arc. His legacy as a teacher and his belief in the next generation of his students—and specifically his faith that Shikamaru would be the king worth protecting—defined his role as the series' most explicitly paternal jonin mentor.
