One Piece Film: Gold takes place aboard the Gran Tesoro — a massive entertainment vessel owned by the "Golden Emperor" Gild Tesoro, a man who commands more wealth than any government and whose influence rivals the World Government itself. When the Straw Hats find themselves trapped and indebted to Tesoro after a gambling setup goes wrong, Luffy and the crew must take on the Gran Tesoro's entire operation while dealing with Tesoro's power — the Gol Gol no Mi, which allows him to coat anything in gold and create golden restraints. The film was partly overseen by Eiichiro Oda and features character designs he contributed to.

Gold is notable as a non-canon film that attempts a larger, more cinematic scope than previous entries, with the Gran Tesoro functioning as a detailed world unto itself — complete with its own economy, celebrity culture, and underclass of enslaved workers whose liberation becomes a subplot. The film tackles themes of wealth, exploitation, and freedom that resonate with One Piece's core values. Action sequences involving the entire Straw Hat crew are well-choreographed, giving even supporting members meaningful moments. While it has no effect on the canon storyline, Gold is considered one of the better-produced non-canon One Piece films and is a solid choice for fans wanting more Straw Hat adventures between arcs.
