Code Geass: Lelouch of the Re;surrection

Code Geass: Lelouch of the Re;surrection is a direct sequel to the Code Geass television series, set several years after the events of R2 and answering the question that the series' iconic ending deliberately left ambiguous. Without spoiling specifics, the film takes a stance on Lelouch's fate and follows a resurrected Lelouch as he joins Suzaku and C.C. to rescue Nunnally from a new geopolitical threat in a newly established kingdom. The film functions as a continuation of the theatrical Compilation film series (Re;surrection connects to the continuity of those recap films, not directly to the TV series) but the narrative is largely accessible for those familiar with the original show's events.

The film is divisive among Code Geass fans precisely because it addresses the ending — which the original series purposely left interpretable. Those who preferred the original series' open-ended conclusion may find Re;surrection's answers deflating, while fans who always wanted a definitive continuation tend to find it satisfying. The animation quality is excellent, and the film delivers action set-pieces and character interactions that long-time fans wanted to see. C.C.'s role in the story and her dynamic with Lelouch are especially well-handled. Regardless of whether it improves on the TV ending, Re;surrection is worthwhile for Code Geass fans as a generous epilogue for beloved characters.
