Elenco Zanpakuto — Bleach
Complete guide to 12 Zanpakuto, Shikai releases, and Bankai forms — every Soul Reaper's blade ability explained. Updated 2026.
What is a Zanpakuto?
A Zanpakuto is the primary weapon of a Soul Reaper (Shinigami) in Bleach. Each sword has its own name, spirit, and unique ability — no two Zanpakuto are the same. Soul Reapers unlock their sword's power in two stages: Shikai (initial release, unlocked by knowing the sword's name) and Bankai (final release, requiring the Soul Reaper to materialize and defeat their sword's spirit). Achieving Bankai normally takes 10+ years of training; Ichigo mastered it in 3 days using a compression method created by Urahara.
The Bankai amplifies a Soul Reaper's power 5–10× and often changes their appearance. Captains are required to have mastered Bankai. Some Zanpakuto spirits — like Zangetsu — are deeply tied to their wielder's inner conflicts and evolve alongside their personal growth throughout the series.
Zanpakuto (Shikai)
Hyorinmaru
Wielder: Toushiro Hitsugaya
Hitsugaya's sealed Zanpakuto is the most powerful ice-type Zanpakuto in the Soul Society. Released with 'Sit upon the frozen heavens, Hyorinmaru,' it summons an ice dragon that freezes anything it touches, and the blade itself can generate ice constructs. Hitsugaya achieved Bankai at an unusually young age, one of the youngest captains in Soul Society history.
Ryujin Jakka
Wielder: Genryusai Shigekuni Yamamoto
Yamamoto's Zanpakuto is a plain, unadorned katana in its sealed state, and the strongest fire-type Zanpakuto in the Soul Society. Released with the command 'Collapse, Ryujin Jakka,' it wreathes the blade in flames hot enough to boil the sea. As the oldest and most powerful captain, Yamamoto rarely needed to release it at all.
Senbonzakura
Wielder: Byakuya Kuchiki
Byakuya's sealed Zanpakuto is an ordinary-looking katana. Released with 'Scatter, Senbonzakura,' it splits into a thousand razor-thin cherry-blossom-shaped blade fragments that can be directed with precise control, giving Byakuya both long-range offense and a dazzling, elegant fighting style befitting the head of the Kuchiki noble house.
Shinso
Wielder: Gin Ichimaru
Gin's sealed Zanpakuto is a standard-length katana. Its Shikai, released with 'Shoot to kill, Shinso,' extends the blade instantly to roughly three times its original length at high speed, letting Gin strike from a deceptive distance — a trait that mirrors his personality throughout the series, always keeping enemies (and allies) at arm's length until it's too late.
Tenken
Wielder: Sajin Komamura
Komamura's sealed Zanpakuto is a katana with a guard shaped like an animal skull. Released with 'Trample, Tenken,' it summons a translucent giant warrior that mirrors Komamura's own movements, letting him fight at a vastly larger scale — the direct predecessor to the towering armored form seen in his Bankai.
Zangetsu
Wielder: Ichigo Kurosaki
Ichigo's sealed Zanpakuto takes the unusual form of a massive black cleaver-like blade wrapped in bandages, worn on his back rather than at his hip. Unlike most Zanpakuto, it has no formal Shikai release command — Ichigo's spiritual pressure is so overwhelming that his sword's true sealed state already resembles a Shikai-level weapon, a fact that puzzles other Soul Reapers throughout the series.
Bankai (Final Release)
Bankai: Daiguren Hyorinmaru
Hitsugaya's Bankai manifests as enormous ice wings and a dragon tail. Three flower petals orbit him and each one lost represents his available power shrinking — a time limit on the form's full use. At full cold, creates ice constructs across building-scale areas.
Bankai: Kamishini no Yari
Wielder: Gin Ichimaru
Gin Ichimaru's Bankai extends his blade at 500 times its length and 500 times the speed of sound. The sheath of his blade contains Shinso's true power — contraction delivers Korose Kamishini no Yari, a precise poison delivery at the moment of recall.
Bankai: Kokujou Tengen Myo-oh
Wielder: Sajin Komamura
Komamura's Bankai summons a giant samurai god — an enormous armoured warrior whose every movement mirrors Komamura's. Scale allows attacks against Menos-class enemies. His Beast-Human transformation later creates a version that removes his own heart from his body for true invincibility.
Bankai: Senbonzakura Kageyoshi
Wielder: Byakuya Kuchiki
Byakuya's Bankai summons one billion blades of pink petals — each a razor fragment — across the entire battlefield. The petals can attack from all directions simultaneously or be compressed into two enormous blades.
Bankai: Tensa Zangetsu
Wielder: Ichigo Kurosaki
Ichigo's Bankai compresses all his spiritual pressure into a black-bladed nodachi, tripling his speed while reducing his spiritual pressure signature to near-zero. Essentially trades raw power output for godspeed movement.
Bankai: Zanka no Tachi
Wielder: Genryusai Shigekuni Yamamoto
Yamamoto's Bankai absorbs all his flames into his blade — reducing the sword to an ashen stick. The concentrated heat reaches 15 million degrees at the blade's edge — hotter than the Sun. Every swing causes evaporation. Used for fewer than ten seconds at Wandenreich.
