Episodes 1-18 (1989) introduce Ranma Saotome, a young martial artist cursed to turn into a girl whenever splashed with cold water (and back into a boy with hot water) after falling into a cursed spring in China. Engaged to Akane Tendo by their fathers' arrangement, Ranma must navigate martial arts rivals, romantic chaos, and his own curse. This original run was cancelled after 18 episodes due to low ratings.

Episodes 19-161 (1990-1992) cover the revived continuation, subtitled Nettōhen ("Hot-Blooded Chapter"), which ran for six additional broadcast seasons. It greatly expands the cast of rivals and suitors introduced in the manga, escalating the show's blend of martial arts action and romantic comedy through to the anime's final episode.
