Rem is the shinigami who accompanies Misa Amane and develops genuine feelings for her—a profound anomaly for a death god—sacrificing her own existence by writing L's name and Watari's name in her Death Note to protect Misa from L's investigation, which was exactly what Light manipulated her into doing.
