Shirley Fenette is a classmate and genuine friend who loved Lelouch, a civilian girl from a military family whose father was accidentally killed in one of Zero's operations, driving her through grief, hatred, and eventually back to forgiving him after Lelouch manipulated her memories. Her death at Rolo's hands—after her memories were restored by Charles's Geass removal—is the most personal cost of Lelouch's war, cutting down someone who loved him purely despite everything she knew. Her loss is the clearest demonstration that Lelouch's revolution inevitably destroys the ordinary people he claims to protect.
