Biography

Reki Kawahara is a Japanese light novel author who created Sword Art Online and Accel World, initially published as web novels before being picked up by ASCII Media Works' Dengeki Bunko imprint. Kawahara began writing SAO in 2002 as a web novel to explore the concept of being permanently trapped in a VR game — a premise he had to delay when the story's mechanics became too realistic after similar ideas appeared in other media. The Sword Art Online anime adaptation became one of the most commercially successful anime franchises of the 2010s despite polarized critical reception, selling millions of Blu-rays and generating substantial merchandise revenue globally. Kawahara has expressed interest primarily in exploring the philosophical and social implications of complete virtual reality rather than traditional fantasy adventure tropes.
