Ichirō Ōkouchi

Biography

Ichirō Ōkouchi is a Japanese screenwriter and novelist who co-created Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion alongside director Gorō Taniguchi for Sunrise studio. An experienced anime scriptwriter with credits on Eureka Seven and other series, Ōkouchi brought political intrigue, chess-match plotting, and operatic drama to Code Geass — creating a story whose moral complexity and protagonist design proved enormously influential. Code Geass is frequently cited as a watershed in anime's global expansion during the late 2000s. Ōkouchi has since worked on numerous other anime properties and continues to be one of anime's most prominent original story creators. He has discussed the deliberate design of Lelouch as a 'hero of justice who becomes indistinguishable from a villain' as a central concept from the series' earliest planning stages.
