Biography

Hajime Isayama is a Japanese manga artist from Ōyama, Ōita, who created Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin), serialized in Bessatsu Shōnen Magazine from 2009 to 2021. Isayama began planning the series in his early twenties while working at an internet café, citing a claustrophobic encounter with an aggressive customer as partial inspiration for the Titan concept. Attack on Titan became a global phenomenon, translated into dozens of languages and adapted into an anime series that introduced Japanese animation to enormous new international audiences. Isayama is praised for his willingness to subvert genre expectations — repeatedly dismantling the heroic frameworks the narrative constructs — and for weaving political and philosophical complexity into what began as a horror-action story. The series' ending generated significant debate among fans, establishing it as one of the most discussed narrative conclusions in modern manga.
