Biography

Gege Akutami is a Japanese manga artist who created Jujutsu Kaisen, serialized in Weekly Shōnen Jump beginning in 2018. Relatively private — publicly identified only by pen name — Akutami has crafted one of the fastest-rising shōnen franchises in history, with the series reaching 80+ million copies in circulation within a few years of launch. The anime adaptation by MAPPA became a cultural phenomenon, particularly the Shibuya Incident arc, which generated discussion comparable to major prestige television. Jujutsu Kaisen is noted for its willingness to permanently kill major characters and follow through on narrative consequences — a relative rarity in long-running shōnen. Akutami has cited Bleach as a major influence, and creator Tite Kubo has publicly expressed admiration for Jujutsu Kaisen in return.
